Word lists

Word checking combines the public-domain ENABLE list by Alan Beale and M. Leo Cooper with an independently generated supplement from the English Speller Database (ESDB), maintained by Kevin Atkinson and contributors.

The ESDB preset includes documented English spelling variants and filters out categories such as names and abbreviations where the source marks them. Ivor’s Letter Lounge normalises the selected spellings to uppercase, removes duplicates, keeps words of 2–15 letters, and adds only spellings absent from ENABLE. The source revision, generation settings and file checksums are recorded below.

This is the Lounge’s own English word list. It is not an official tournament dictionary. Saved plays and scores are not rechecked; future moves use the current list.

Definitions

Short meanings are selected excerpts credited to Wiktionary contributors. Each displayed result links to its source article, whose history identifies its contributors, and to the licence applying to that result. Where the Free Dictionary API supplies a result, that route is credited too. Results without supported licence and source metadata are not shown.

Ivor’s Letter Lounge selects at most two senses, removes formatting and may shorten long definitions. Those changes are identified alongside the text. Direct Wiktionary excerpts are available under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. A result obtained through the fallback may identify a different supported Creative Commons licence; use the licence linked on that result.

The definitions and our adaptations of that text remain under their stated content licences. Do not treat the application’s other terms as restricting those rights. These content licences do not by themselves license the application’s independent source code or artwork.

Open-source software

Ivor’s Letter Lounge uses open-source components including React, Radix, Lucide, Tailwind CSS and vinext. Their copyright, permission and warranty notices are preserved in the full notices file. This includes both Lucide’s ISC notice and the Feather MIT notice for derived icons, and the Apache terms for class-variance-authority.

The build records the dependencies actually present in emitted browser and server bundles, plus styles expanded during processing. It checks their installed versions against the lockfile and requires a reviewed licence and exact notice text. Source and build integration notices are listed separately.
